Solar PV (Photo Voltaic) panels are very economic these days. Most panels arrive in NZ by the pallet of 30 units at a time from China. We offer 270W Yingli and 285W Yingli bi-facial panels . We can freight 30 at time within NZ to any major town (truck depot) for you to collect. Freight costs can be high to some destinations as a full pallet is over 500kg. Both these Yingli panels have a VOC<40V which means that for off-grid ELV (<120V) applications you wire them in strings of 3 to your MPPT controller. If you stick to ELV rules (Schedule 1 clause 2b of the Electricity (Safety) Regulation 2010) in NZ you can wire it all yourself as this is not PEW (prescribed electrical work) under NZ law. Such ELV work does not need an electrician to do it or an inspector to check it. If you are newbie make sure you read our solar PV installation guide and have the practical skills and knowledge to do a good and safe job.
Some electricians have been giving misleading advice to ELV DIY clients in NZ on this topic. So take the time to check any advice you are given and get it in writing.
The best price is on a pallet of 30 (8.1kW). Most 100 amp MPPT controllers can take up to 21 panels (7 string of 3 = 5.67kW) or you can install all 8.1kW onto 2 x 80 amp MPPT controllers. We also offer < 1 pallet for collection from our New Plymouth store but only if you can collect during business hours Monday – Friday. If you collect our New Plymouth store the freight fee still applies as the freight cost was incurred from the Auckland depot to New Plymouth depot.
